Baccarat (a variation of Chemin-De-Fer), is not a hard game to learn. It is similar to blackjack, except that nine is the very best hand one can have, rather than twenty-one.

Once you decide whether you wish to bet on "Player", "Bank", or "Tie Hand", there is no thinking involved. Everything is determined in advance by established rules - when a hand will be hit, when it will stand, etc.

Two hands are dealt, one for the "player" and one for the "banker". You can bet on one or the other. If the hand you bet on wins, you receive a 1 to 1 (even money) payoff. You can also bet that the hands will tie, and receive an 8 to1 payoff if they do. The chances of ties hands being dealt are slim - roughly one in ten hands, hence the larger pay-out for tie bettors.

To begin the game, each hand receives two cards. When necessary, additional cards are drawn according to the rules. The hand closest to 9 wins. Tens and faces cards (Jacks, Queens and Kings) count 0. The Ace counts for 1 and the 2-9 cards are face value. The hand that comes closest to a count of 9 wins. Hands cannot bust as they do in Blackjack, because the first digit of a two-digit number is always dropped. For example, if 5 and 7 are drawn for a total of 12, the count is 2. When there is a tie, nobody loses and nobody wins, except for the tie bettor.

If the first two cards total 8 or 9, the hand is a "natural" and wins automatically, unless the hands tie. If neither hand is a natural additional cards are drawn to determine a winner.

Banker and player bets pay even money when you win. However, winning banker bets are subject to a 5% house commission.  Betting on "Bank" gives you a slight edge over betting on "Player".

All bets are made before the cards are dealt.

In Chemin-De-Fer style games, each player gets a chance to deal, but may simply pass the shoe to the next player if desired.

Third Card Rules - The following chart governs when the player and/or the bank will automatically receive a third card:
